After some suspense and action, Hyundai has finally launched its all-new i10, which was earlier known only by its 'PA' codename. Designed as a compact city-car the i10's small dimensions are said to be ideal for meandering through the city or parking in tight spaces, despite being a full 5-seater with five doors as standard. To help with interior space the i10 has a wheelbase of 2,380mm - the longest in its class - enabling more luggage space and decent handling.

For the Indian market, all i10 variants will offer standard air conditioning, split/folding rear seats, two-tone beige upholstery, rear seat belts and an electronic trip and odometer. It also comes with a proper tailgate instead of glass, electric front windows, central locking and six-speaker CD/MP3 player.

Powered by a 1.1-litre, iRDE gasoline engine that develops 69hp (70kW), the new i10's standard transmission has a five-speed manual gearbox, while all versions come with an electric power steering. An automatic gearbox will be available as an option.

In addition to the other features, the higher-end variants come with a panoramic sunroof (which the company claims is a first for this class of cars in the local market), a rear spoiler, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob and a keyless entry. The bumpers are body-coloured with detachable inserts while there is an integrated air dam at the front.

The suspension consists of Macpherson struts at the front with a coil spring and torsion bar arrangement at the rear. The i10 is also available with ABS (anti-lock braking system), seat belts with pretensioners, dual airbags, doors, which automatically unlock on sensing an impact and a high-mounted rear stop lamp.

For its customers in India, Hyundai will offer what it calls a 'two year unlimited warranty package'. Trim levels for the home market will be the D–Lite, Era and Magna. The i10 will also supplement, rather than replace the slightly smaller Santro that Hyundai has built in India since 1998.

The company plans to launch versions for export markets, as well as a diesel derivative in 2008. In India, the new model will compete with Maruti Suzuki's Wagon R, Zen Estilo and Tata Indica. The i10 will be available in 10 colours and is priced between Rs 3.39 lakh and Rs 3.98 lakh.
